  1. A few years ago, GoDaddy was rather famously caught sniffing domain name searches and then reserving searched names for possible premium resale. The company says it no longer engages in this practice, but I don’t trust it for this and a variety of other reasons, not least the company’s relentless upsell attempts.

    A little-known feature of the domain name system is that the organization with oversight, ICANN, mandates that all domain name registrars allow purchasers to “return” a domain within five days for credit at that registrar. (To avoid “domain name tasting,” refunds are not given.)

    Dynadot is the only registrar I’m aware of that is completely transparent about this; they even offer a countdown clock that shows the time remaining in the grace period.
